The Environmental Protection Agency today published a final rule in the federal register stripping Clean Water Act protections for more than half the nation’s wetlands and millions of miles of streams. The cuts put drinking water sources for millions of people in the U.S. at risk and jeopardize the ability to counter floods, droughts, toxic algal blooms, groundwater depletion and other worsening water issues driven by the climate crisis.

In response, Dalal Aboulhosn, Sierra Club Deputy Legislative Director issued the following statement.

“In the midst of this pandemic, the Trump administration has just given polluters another free pass– this time to contaminate groundwater, destroy streams and wetlands and put our water at risk. The need for clean water cannot be ignored, nor can the consequences of doing so. Sierra Club will continue to defend the Clean Water Act and other vital environmental protections as we work to keep communities healthy.”
